Blog > Brockville Ad & Sales Club January Speaker: Doing Business on the Web

Jay Goldman

Although some people find it hard to believe, I really enjoy getting up in front of a room full of people and giving a talk and last night was no exception! I was honoured to be invited by Brockville's Ad & Sales Club to visit their lovely city and present on the topic of Doing Business on the Web, something we try to know a thing or two about. My thanks go out to Anisa Sherwood (a great Brockville Mortgage Broker from Assured Mortgages) who tirelessly organized the talk, President Robert Tavares from Freedom 55 Financial for a great introduction, and to all of the members of the Club who I had the chance to chat with! A special thanks to the crew who took me out for a drink at The Brock Pub, including Kathy MacDonald (from Brockville real estate agents the Keary Team), Taira Kirkland (a very talented and highly knowledgeable Brockville web designer), and Dave Holmes (from high end server vendor Testworx), who brought along his lovely wife Stephanie.

I think the talk went well despite yesterday's incredible wind actually knocking out power to the venue (they were worried the projector might strain their backup generator and it sure did and the power died as I wrapped up :). The crowd's tech knowledge spanned everything from very casual web use to bloggers and SEO-fanatics, so I started off with a quick review of the basics (e.g.: Web 1.0's one way street vs. Web 2.0's participatory conversation), and then jumped into blogging, social media, search, ecom, and collaboration. We covered a lot in an hour and some people were starting to get a bit of the Information Overload glaze in their eyes, so I wrapped up with an encouragement to take advantage of the wealth of free software and opportunity and get out there and experiment. I'm on the train on the way back to Toronto now, but will post the slides to SlideShare from a more reliable net connection for anyone interested.

Jay, really enjoyed your presentation tonight at the Greater Brockville Ad & Sales Club. Your dynamic presentation was valuable and well recieved by the membership. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and insight with us.  I personally got some good ideas that I can better my business with.

We have just launched a new site on our site for our clients, it is interactive and clients can send me emails if they want us to call them, make changes, etc.  Our new system also intgrates with our CRM so we are able to track when they have been looking at their portfolio, etc. This will be valuable info as we continue to grow and improve our business. You can see the link by clicking on "E-Statement" Button on our main website. http://www.investmentreports.ca/ross/  We implemented last year a website for "Tax Services , http://www.cchsitebuilder.com/TimothyRoss/  it is full of tools and info that you and your associates may find of value.  I also started blogging on my birthday this year, figured it out. I actually opened my account 2 years ago on my birthday and couldn't figure it out, beyong putting my pciture and a few tag lines on it.  It is a great way to get your ideas written out. I love it. Have written some good reflective stuff. Today's blog post is on "Don't Quit" , I encourage you to have a read. www.advisor.blog.ca   I have incorporated music and video on our site as well , up lifting stuff that inspires and encourages, its about being real with people. My favorite is Don't Blink and Rascal Flats "My Wish" http://www.timothyross.com/inspirational.html   I actually use these links ion my letters, so my letters to my clients have video's in them, I think that is actually kinda cool!

I've read a few of the books you talked about and one that I'm currently studying is "Mavericks at Work", it talks alot about stuff I think you would be interested in. If you haven't got it, it is worth getting. The authors are from Fast Company.

Anisa was suppose to give you my business card, it will be the one that stands up and makes a great book mark.

Thanks again

Jay, Have a great 2008!

Jay...you are far too modest!!  I have attended a number of seminars and training sessions related to a variety of topics, including what's new in cyberspace.  Your brief, easy to follow and well planned introduction to so many areas of the internet was the best by a long shot.  I believe it was extremely thorough and enjoyed by all in attendance.  I know that many people have discussed your enthusiasm and knowledge on a wide range of topics and I wish that my entire team would have had the opportunity to attend.  We will watch your site often and appreciate getting to know a knew contact in the technology realm...hopefully our paths will cross again!  Regards, Kathy  MacDonald, The Keary Team @ Royal LePage Riveredge Realty Ltd., Brokerage, Brockville.
