Our friend Sean Lerner (of the fabulous TTC Rider Efficiency Guide) interviewed us for a busienss course at Centennial College and you, our beloved readers, get the benefit!

1. What image do you promote for your company (how do you hope prospective and current clients see you organization)?

We promote ourselves as being at the top of our industry in terms of ability and customer service, and as authorities in our field (without being too full of ourselves!). Our weblog sets the tone of our communications in that it aspires to be an excellent source of relevant news and opinions while managing to be a fun and entertaining read. We hope that our clients see us as a partner rather than a vendor and we aspire towards long term relationships in which we become trusted and essential parts of their organizations.

2. How do you promote your company (details around advertising or do you rely on word of mouth)?

We have rarely actively promoted Radiant Core beyond making sure that our site is well indexed in search engines and that we appear in all the various listings for web design firms. Our best contacts and new clients have come through referrals from our family of existing clients and we work hard to make sure that they love working with us and would not hesitate to refer us to their networks.

3. What niche market do you target (nonprofits, small media, small business, etc.)?

We don't target any niche markets specifically, beyond clients who need websites. We've worked with nonprofits (United Way, FACE, The Toronto Italian Film Festival), very large corporations (Scott Paper, Symantec, Bacardi, GLAD, and Kraft), and very small growing companies (Foxy Originals, The Glenn Group, Carrie Fisher, and Mortgage Marcus). Our work has involved diverse industries from home building to bars and restaurants to fashion to consumer packaged goods.

4. Why have clients bought from you?

Our clients generally choose to engage our services because they have decided to make a serious investment in their online representation (or in an online venture) and have realized a need to develop a long term relationship with an industry leading vendor. Our flagship product, the Foundation Website Management Platform, is usually a large factor in their decision as it makes it simple and highly cost-effective for clients to manage their own websites without the need to have us continually updating them.

5. What's an example of your pricing?

In a very, very general ballpark sense, simple marketing websites based on Foundation tend to range from $4k - $6k, adding eCommerce and a catalog or contest puts sites in the $10k - $15, and Flash animations, web application development, complex interactions with login areas and that sort of thing end towards the $20k+ range. We've been involved in projects for as little as $100 and as much as $70k depending on our responsibilities and the complexity of the components we need to design and build.

6. How many years have you been in business?

Radiant Core was formed in August 2003 and we just recently celebrated our third birthday!

7. Where are your clients located (for example: Toronto, GTA, worldwide)?

The majority of our clients are either located in the GTA or maintain offices here, but we have clients in Mountain View, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Boston as well.

8. How many staff do you have at your business?

Radiant Core employs a staff of six people, as well as a group of highly-trusted subcontractor ninjas who we call in on an as-needed basis.

9. How much do you produce a year? (for example, how many websites do you create, how many websites do you maintain)

This is a tough one since our output is highly dependent on the types of projects we're involved in. We generally have four - six simultaneous engagements which will all usually result in at least one website, and the average length of our projects is about two months, so we'll produce anywhere from about 12 to 25 websites over the course of a year. We don't tend to maintain our clients' sites ourselves as they use Foundation to do that, so we're generally involved in the life-cycle of sites from an ongoing development and expansion perspective.
